The moon was just disappearing as the sky cleared when Leon woke up. After taking a quick bath, he put on the familiar combat gear, then sat at the edge of his bed.

Before they would move towards Williamsburg, there were a few things he wanted to do.

Holding a Basic Ability Upgrade Card in his hand, he focused on his own status window—his abilities, specifically.

’Upgrade Darkness Manipulation,’ He thought.

Slowly, the card in his hand ignited with flames, then was slowly consumed until there was nothing left of it.

Leon immediately brought up the details of his abilities, and he was pleased.

[Ability: Tier One Darkness/Shadow Manipulation - Can create, solidify, and manipulate darkness and shadow elements according to the user’s will. The user can also freely manipulate existing shadows within a certain range.]

There was no big change in the description of the ability except for the second line. Still, he could tell that there was a qualitative change in the ability.

Curious, he instinctively closed his eyes, then tried something new. His sight was drowned in darkness, yet he could still perceive his surroundings through a special sense.

’The shadows...’

He was fascinated by the discovery of this new function of his ability, and he couldn’t help but explore it more. His shadow senses spread out, enveloping the whole villa and locking onto all the occupants.

For a moment, Leon felt omnipresent. Then, he hurriedly retracted his senses, coughing violently with his brows twitching.

’Ugh... nobody told me omnipresence means invasion of privacy.’

He had unintentionally witnessed a few things that couldn’t be unseen, so he could only try to ignore them.

Opening his eyes, he nodded. "Mn, this new upgrade is truly useful."

He set aside the upgrade of the first ability, then moved on to the next one.

’Upgrade Extraction,’ He thought.

Just like the other time, the card ignited in flames, and was quickly consumed. Leon brought up the upgraded ability’s information, then checked through.

[Ability: Tier One Extraction - Can plunder and completely remove abilities, traits, and memories from killed creatures. The plundered abilities and traits will retain their full efficiency and level.]

’Wait, memories?’

Instantly, Leon snapped to focus, his eyes narrowing at that specific detail. Although extracting memories seemed useless, Leon knew how important it was.

’If I killed a spy, I could just extract their memories and learn more about the enemy faction.’

The thought made him create several simulations in his mind, and only after a few minutes did he snap out of it.

Frowning, he reached into his storage ring and retrieved the trait scroll gotten from the wyvern. Although it seemed useless, it definitely wasn’t.

After all, the Star Stream had dropped it as the only reward for killing the wyvern.

Clenching his hand around the scroll, he chose to learn it.

[You have learnt the Trait - Cellular Memory]

Leon barely blinked before another message appeared before his eyes.

[Do you wish to combine [Cellular Memory], [Instant Recovery], and [Stamina Regeneration] into a single trait [Adaptation]?]

Leon’s expression froze, and he stared at the message with a dumbfounded expression. Although he was aware that compatible abilities could be used together, he didn’t think that they could actually be combined.

Selene hadn’t informed him about her ability fusion, so he had no way of knowing.

Suppressing the waves in his heart, he agreed with the combination process.

[You have learnt the Trait - Adaptation]

Without hesitation, Leon brought up the new trait’s information.

[Trait: Adaptation - The user’s body instinctively records and analyzes external stimuli, injuries, and harmful influences. Repeated exposure allows the body to gradually adapt, reducing the effectiveness of the same threat over time.]

’Wait... a real adaptation...?’

To say Leon was shocked was an understatement. As an avid NovelFire reader, he knew exactly how terrifying an ability like this could become. He had always dreamed of possessing such an ability, imagining himself becoming invincible with it.

Yet, never in his life had he thought he would actually acquire it.

’This isn’t a dream, right?’

His fists clenched tightly, and a wide smile appeared on his face.

’Not bad, the stronger I am, the higher my chances of surviving this damned world.’

A sigh escaped his lips, and he stood up, stretching his body. The sky had fully cleared, and the sun was already peeking out from the horizon.

Leaving his room, he came outside and was met by a special rescue squad he had personally handpicked for today. They all stood at attention beside the modified buses that had been prepared for this journey. The three buses looked nothing like ordinary vehicles anymore. Thick plates of mutated beast hide covered their sides, while metal reinforcements had been welded over the windows. The tires were wider than usual, their rubber replaced with layers of compressed beast hide.

Selene, Marie, Emily, Nicolas, and Jones were present, having arrived a few minutes earlier.

Leon walked up to them, his expression relaxed.

"Is everything ready?" He asked, his gaze fixed on Nicolas.

The man nodded, his expression stoic. "Yes, leader. There shall be no problems until you return."

Leon nodded, patting his shoulder. Then, he turned to the couple present.

"You two. I’ll be leaving the camp in your hands. Support him as much as you can."

After spending time together, Leon had learned a lot about the two. Although they were extremely ruthless during their first encounter, Leon had come to understand their characters properly.

They weren’t unnecessarily vicious, and they were less likely to scheme behind his back. After all, killing them would be nothing more than an inconvenience to him.

Emily and Jones nodded with smiles, stepping beside Nicolas quietly.

Giving them one last look, Leon turned to his remaining two companions.

"Let’s get moving. I want us to get there today—hopefully," He smiled, then boarded the modified bus at the rear. Marie picked the one in the middle, while Selene boarded the lead bus.

The other thirty evolvers also got into the buses, and before long, they drove out of the camp’s three sections, making their way through the Bushwick neighborhood.

Soon, the three vehicles ran into their first obstacle—a horde of unranked zombies, led by a Tier One zombie with the signature yellow crystal embedded in its forehead.

Sticking his head out through the window, Leon gazed at the horde with a bored expression.

"Hey, Marie. Can you handle them?"

His voice wasn’t loud, but the woman heard him perfectly even though the roars and snarls of the approaching zombies were deafening.

She smiled confidently, then stepped out of the bus.

"Leave it to me, boss."
