Marie stopped in front of the parked buses, her gaze fixed on the horde of over two hundred zombies rushing towards them. There was not a hint of fear in her eyes. Instead, those grey orbs blazed with an intense determination to fight.

When the horde drew close, she quietly whispered, "Rain of Judgement."

The morning sky turned red and golden, and the temperature in the air rose sharply. Before the zombies could understand what was happening, small drops of fire, each one even smaller than an ordinary fireball, began to fall from the sky.

The drops of fire were indeed small, but they were extremely potent. It only took a couple of drops to completely incinerate a zombie and turn it to ashes.

In just a few seconds, the horde of zombies was engulfed in flames, and their numbers were dropping sharply, succumbing to Marie’s attack.

[You have slain...]

[You have slain...]

Notifications kept appearing before her eyes, but Marie didn’t entertain them. Instead, she watched the effect of her class’s first skill with fascination.

Rain of Judgement was a special AoE attack that continuously poured heavy drops of fire onto the targets, turning them to ashes in no time. Although this skill consumed a lot of mana, it was something she could use twice before her mana reserves ran dry. Her class—Judge of War—was a special class that functioned mainly on belief. As long as Marie believed that she was clearing out evil and doing the right thing, the powerful skills would be available for her to use, just like in this situation.

By the time the zombie horde reached her, there were less than twenty zombies left. She cancelled the AoE skill, choosing to conserve mana and execute the others with her spear.

Bang!

She kicked off the ground and lunged at the leading zombie, their Tier One leader. The zombie roared, baring its yellow teeth at her.

She was unfazed by its roar, as she thrust her spear forward in a single motion.

The zombie immediately reached out, intending to grab her weapon and stop it. However, the moment the zombie touched the spear, its flesh sizzled like a vampire exposed to sun, and it recoiled.

Unobstructed, the spear barely lost momentum as it pierced into the zombie’s neck.

[You have slain a Level 26 Tier One Evolved Zombie Leader! +9 Agility points gained!]

The other zombies froze at the abrupt loss of their leader, but only briefly. In less than a few seconds, they lunged at her with the mindless hunger and savagery characteristic of zombies.

Marie slashed her spear a couple of times, decapitating the remaining zombies easily.

When she was done, she bent down to pick the soul crystal from the Tier One zombie.

Holding the crystal in her hand, she rushed back to her bus, then shouted to the rear, "All cleared, Boss."

Leon nodded, then gestured for the driver to start the vehicle. Soon, the three modified buses continued their drive through Bushwick.

They ran into smaller clusters of zombies along the way, but with no Tiered creatures in sight, Marie easily handled them with her Rain of Judgement skill.

Three hours later, they finally crossed from Bushwick into Bedford Stuyvesant. Unlike Bushwick, which only had weak zombies and barely any Tier One creatures, Bedford was much more dangerous.

Massive hordes of mutated rats dwelled in the sewer, and if they surrounded a target, then it was doomed.

Even Leon had to show caution with this with these kinds of creatures around. At some point, they had to change routes to avoid being tied up by a horde of mutated rats with dagger-like fangs.

The buses progressed with caution, but it wasn’t even long before they ran into their first enemy.

A pack of mutated dogs suddenly ambushed them, throwing claw swipes at the buses. Perhaps an ambush was an overstatement, as Leon already sensed their approach.

The instant they attacked, he counterattacked. As the large mutated dogs of different breeds ran up to the buses, their shadows moved and replicated their attacks.

Claw swipes raked at the underbelly of the beasts, and some of them collapsed instantly, either gravely injured or dead. The others glanced at their fallen comrades, howled into the sky, then chased after the buses with rage in addition to their desire to kill.

Leon didn’t do anything after that counterattack, letting the dogs catch up to the buses. Just as they were about to start hacking at the vehicles, ice bullets manifested before each mutated dog and shot forward.

Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!

The mutated dogs had their heads pierced, then frozen solid from the inside. After gaining the Ice Manipulation ability, Selene’s abilities had undergone qualitative changes, and she could control her ice constructs with far more precision.

To her, killing a pack of unranked mutated dogs only required her to see them, then use her ability slightly.

This was how powerful she had become.

The ride continued, but not without obstacles. Although very few mutated beasts or zombies capable of threatening them appeared, the mobs still caused enough trouble to slow them down.

By the time they arrived in Williamsburg, the sun was already disappearing into the horizon.

Leon inhaled a breath of fresh air as they pulled into the familiar neighborhood. In the leading bus, Selene gave directions to the driver, guiding him towards the camp they had established.

In a matter of minutes, the three buses parked before the gate of the apartment building, alerting the evolvers on guard duty.

To avoid misunderstandings and unnecessary conflict, Selene, Marie, and Leon chose to get off first before the other evolvers followed them.

"L-Leader!"

One of the evolvers recognized Leon immediately, as he had been personally rescued by him.

"It’s the Leader!"

"They’re back!"

With the evolvers on guard duty shouting so loudly, the people inside immediately came out to see what had caused the commotion.

Leon was a little flabbergasted by their enthusiastic welcome, but he didn’t shut them up.

Instead, he sighed and gestured for them to open the gates. Once the gates were opened, the three buses drove into the large compound, then parked side by side.

"Mommy!"

Nora’s bright and cheerful scream turned their attention towards the people emerging from the building.

The little girl with twin pigtails rushed towards Marie and jumped on her.

"Nora..."

Marie held her daughter tightly, pouring all her longing into that heartfelt hug. While the two embraced, the others also approached them.

"Boss!"

Richard and Miguel saluted Leon with wide grins on their faces. The two young men were noticeably stronger than before, and Leon was pleased to realize that they had actually become Tier One Evolveds too.

He patted their shoulders, then glanced at his remaining two subordinates. Fel stepped forward with a smile, then gave him a courteous bow.

"Welcome back, Boss."

Leon smiled back and ruffled her hair, then turned to Cassie. The black-haired girl was looking at him with eyes that sent a chill down his spine.

’What... did I do something?’

Before he could think too deeply, the young lady smiled faintly.

"It’s good to have you back, Boss."

Leon nodded at her, then glanced at Selene. Reymond had already walked up to her, a bright smile on his face.

"It’s good to see you’re doing great," He said.

Selene nodded, allowing her frosty expression to soften slightly. "Thank you. I’m glad you’re alright too."

Leon was amused by their interaction, then he felt confused. Shouldn’t the first person to welcome Selene be Gwen—her best friend?
