Leon walked through the city gates, covered in mutated beast blood. The guards were stunned and wanted to attack, but after recognizing him, they immediately pulled back and greeted him with respect.

Leon gave them a nod and made his way to the Core Ring. He observed the condition of the Outer Ring and the Inner Ring, comparing them to their state when Dwayne was the camp leader.

They were worlds apart. The Inner Ring was flourishing, and if a person was unaware in the past, they wouldn’t even know that the world was in ruins.

Although not as good as the former, the Outer Ring was pleasing to look at. There were no hungry people sitting on the streets listlessly, nor were there any men or women openly selling their bodies for food.

’I heard they upgraded to having brothels. Humanity and sex are inseparable, huh?’

He chuckled as he entered the Core Ring. It was late in the night already, and except for the patrol guards, there was barely anyone around.

He took off his bloodstained armor that had almost been destroyed, changing into casual clothes instead. If he suddenly appeared in the villa covered in blood, it wouldn’t be proper at all.

To his surprise, it seemed everyone had retreated to their rooms, leaving the ground floor empty.

’Much better...’

Leon immediately went to his room to take a clean bath before returning downstairs for dinner. The meal was exquisite as always, and after thanking the maids, he headed to Gwen’s room.

’Would she be asleep already?’

He raised a hand and knocked on the door. "Gwen?"

There was no response for a few seconds, then he heard her voice.

"Coming..."

Leon felt relieved that she wasn’t asleep yet, as he didn’t want to miss any chance of nurturing Thyra’s soul daily.

Soon, the door opened and Gwen appeared, wearing a soft lavender dress with long, flowing sleeves and a delicate ruffled collar. The nightwear hung loosely around her, yet couldn’t hide her graceful curves.

Her expression was calm and slightly sleepy, with half-lidded violet eyes and a subtle blush across her cheeks. There was a gentle, almost bashful softness to her face, making her look both serene and endearing.

Leon couldn’t help but take a longer look than usual before he snapped out of it.

’Ah...’

"Oh, Leon." Gwen blinked, then smiled at him. "Come in."

Leon smiled back and entered the room, his nose twitching.

Gwen carried a faint, soothing fragrance of moonflowers and vanilla, soft enough to be almost imperceptible. Her room carried the same scent, making the entire place feel strangely peaceful.

He unconsciously relaxed, feeling the tension of the hunt melt away from his body.

"Sit," She said, patting the space beside her. "You came a bit late today."

Leon nodded and sat beside her, moving to take off his shirt. After doing it once, he wasn’t fazed by doing it again. Besides, this wasn’t the second time he was exposing his torso to a woman anyway.

She stared at his chest, noticing scars that had recently faded. "How many Tier Two did you kill today?"

Leon noticed her gaze and answered, "Three."

Gwen’s eyes widened, and her gaze snapped up to his face. She wanted to say something, but after seeing his calm expression, she fell silent.

’Leon... does he even remember what being a student felt like?’

Without expressing her thoughts, she placed her hands on his chest and activated her ability.

Leon felt the soothing sensation again—stronger, this time. He savored it, allowing himself to relax until she was done.

A while later, she pulled away and smiled. "That’s all I can do for now. Until tomorrow evening?"

Leon nodded as he stood up, wearing his shirt again.

"Thank you, Gwen."

She smiled and escorted him out. "It’s my pleasure. Goodnight, Leon."

That... was the last time they saw each other—for the day.

...

The next few days became a blur of rigid routine. Marie pushed the remaining three hundred plus Evolvers to Level 25, then began to handle the private army of one hundred and fifty Evolvers, giving them abilities Leon had prepared beforehand.

Each person was stacked with abilities he had personally extracted and grouped, ensuring their combat abilities were synchronized and balanced.

These men had been personally screened by Gwen and Leon, and their loyalty was unquestionable. Even without Leon ordering her, Marie took it upon herself to help each one of them complete their evolution requirements.

Though, in four days, she could only help thirteen people, pushing them to become Tier One Evolvers.

Meanwhile, Leon continued to hunt alone, scouring the Mutated Forest for Tier Two beasts. His life was constantly in danger since no Tier Two creature could be underestimated, and it still took his full effort to defeat and kill them.

At some point, he was forced to use some of his available Stat points to increase his strength and speed just to gain the upper hand in the battle.

Still, in the end, every one of his targets fell to his spear, and none escaped.

Each night, he would return to Gwen, letting her help him with Thyra’s soul. He felt deeply indebted to her, but didn’t know how he could pay her back.

At least, not now.

Just like that, the week came to an end, and it was time for them to begin their journey to the government camp in Newark.

On that Monday morning, Leon woke up early, feeling relaxed.

He turned his head, seeing Nora sleep soundly in his arms. He smiled and brushed her hair, then turned to her mother.

Surprisingly, Marie was also awake, and she was looking at him with a clouded expression.

"You’re leaving today, huh..." She muttered, smiling wryly.

Leon nodded. "I’m sorry to leave you and Nora behind, but you should understand why I’m doing that."

Marie nodded, her smile widening. "It’s alright. I’ll defend this place with my life."

"Don’t throw your life away, though." He chuckled. "A city can be rebuilt, but I can’t raise the dead."

Marie froze for a moment, then lowered her head. "... I understand."

Before Leon could say anything else, Marie raised her head and looked at him.

Her expression was strangely quiet. For a moment, she seemed to hesitate, as though she had something she wanted to say but couldn’t find the words.

Then she drew closer.

Leon blinked in surprise when she suddenly pressed her lips against his. The familiar scent of Marie’s perfume reached him, and for a moment, his mind went completely blank.

’Eh... a kiss?’
