World Evolution Apocalypse: I Possess The Extraction Ability
Chapter 235: An Eerie IslandLeon’s group was met with unusual stillness and silence on the island. There were no zombies loitering around, and neither were there any mutated beasts prowling the land.
There was no sign of human life either. The whole place looked abandoned—at least from their side.
"I don’t like places like this," Leon said, his nose twitching.
The air here still carried the fresh scent of water, mixed with a faint, unpleasant odor.
’What could that be?’
Shrugging, he said to the driver, "Drive us to any of the intact buildings around. We should keep the buses and lay low for now."
The older man nodded, then began driving through the empty road.
The other buses followed suit, and after a few minutes, they all drove into an apartment complex with a large garage.
"Spread out and check the whole place. If you see any zombies, kill them immediately."
The Titanbreaker warriors nodded and spread out, bursting through locked doors and searching through the rooms.
To their surprise, there was nothing in the apartment complex. Not a single living being. There were no corpses either, but they saw dried stains of blood.
"This place gives an eerie feeling, not gonna lie," Reymond grumbled, rubbing the back of his neck.
He glanced at the sky—bright and empty. There were no birds in sight.
"It’s not for nothing that horror movies love ghost towns, is it?" Gwen shot him a teasing smile.
Although she was smiling, she wasn’t really relaxed. Nothing about the situation felt right, so she couldn’t help but feel tense.
"Hmm..." Leon rubbed his chin, then glanced at his men on standby. "Fan out and check the surroundings. Maximum of two hundred meters. Pull back immediately if you see or sense something."
"Understood, Commander!"
They immediately moved in different directions, going in pairs and trios. Leon headed to the rooftop of the apartment complex, gaining high ground to keep an eye on everyone.
The building wasn’t the tallest, and it couldn’t let him see much into the distance. However, it was enough for him to keep an eye on his men.
"There really seems to be nothing..."
He muttered, eyes narrowed.
After half an hour, everyone returned without any findings, and Leon finally gave up.
"Alright, we’re going to be resting here for the night. You guys pair up and pick a room. One person keeps watch while the other is asleep. Take turns until sunrise. Clear?"
"Understood, Commander!"
Leon cleaned his ear with his pinky finger, a little annoyed by how lousy they were. However, that didn’t stop him from smiling.
Soon, he went to join the others from the main group in the common room of the apartment complex.
"Where next are we heading?" Miguel asked, his expression serious.
"Our next target should be Bayonne," Leon answered, bringing a cup of tea to his lips. "We’ll move by dawn tomorrow."
Cassie leaned back, then asked, "What about the wrongness in this place? Do you want me to investigate?"
Leon drank silently, considering her offer. Cassie was best suited for this, as most of her skills were well-suited for nighttime investigation.
"What is your priority if I tell you to go?" He asked, glancing at her.
Cassie answered calmly. "The investigation, of course. What else?"
Leon rolled his eyes. He already guessed that this was going to be her reply, but hearing it made his lips twitch.
"No, bottlehead. Your life is the priority. If you encounter something dangerous, pull back immediately."
Cassie blinked and slowly nodded. "... Alright."
Leon didn’t know when, but he knew he had to teach this young woman a few things and remind her about the importance of life.
"As long as you understand that, you can go."
Selene stood up, then headed upstairs. "Since there’s nothing to do at the moment, I’ll take my leave."
"Wait for me!" Gwen smiled and followed her, leaving the others in the common room.
Miguel smiled and turned to Leon. "Hey, Boss. Are we also pairing up? Staying in the same room?"
The young leader shivered, casting a wary glance at his blonde subordinate.
"What are you saying? Of course not," He scowled. "You sleep on your own. You’re strong enough to not be killed that easily."
Miguel released a deflated sigh, then took out his phone.
Since there was nothing to do just like Selene had said, he’d browse the internet.
"Cassie and I are heading upstairs," Fel said quietly, tugging Cassie’s sleeves as they stood up.
Leon nodded in their direction and watched them leave. Then, he turned to Reymond.
"What are you going to do when you find your parents?"
The young man’s expression turned serious after hearing Leon’s question.
"I... I don’t know, honestly. Things are becoming a mess so quickly that it’s confusing. And you..."
He looked at Leon.
"Why would you want to create an independent state? If the government rules again, I’m sure that you won’t just be an ordinary citizen anymore. Anyone with strength would be considered a talent and probably given privilege. Isn’t that enough?"
Leon sighed, understanding his point. He set down the teacup and answered.
"It might seem enough, but it’s not. Tell me, Reymond. Would you leave your fate in the hands of others, or would you decide your own fate by yourself?"
The brown-haired guy blinked and thought about it.
"If... if it’s someone I trust, then I can leave it in the hands of others. If not, then myself."
"Good." Leon smiled. "Then do you think I trust the government?"
Reymond’s eyes narrowed. "Why not? The country has been peaceful ever since the third World War, no?"
Leon agreed with him. "Sure, but that’s not enough for me to trust them. Besides, from what I’ve learned about Selene’s family, I don’t think they’re exactly as friendly as you think they are."
"She told you?" Reymond’s eyes widened.
Before Leon could reply, he sighed and replied himself. "Well, of course she did. Anyway, it’s not all of them, trust me. They’ve been leading the country for years. They definitely know how to do it better."
Leon shook his head, a soft smile on his lips.
"Sure. That, I cannot deny. However, I don’t see any reason why they shouldn’t allow an independent force to emerge. If they’re against it, that means our ideals clash, and we cannot coexist."
Reymond’s eyes widened, and he muttered to himself.
"Cannot coexist, huh...? So you already made up your mind."
