World Evolution Apocalypse: I Possess The Extraction Ability
Chapter 238: Hasty EscapeLeon’s head turned away instantly, and he desperately commanded himself to run. He didn’t even know how he’d managed to do it.
The next thing he knew, he was on the street, carrying Selene and Cassie with him.
Leon didn’t look back. He merely ran back to the apartment complex where the others were staying. They needed to leave the island as fast as possible.
’Can we even? That thing is...’
He remembered what he had seen on the head, feeling a sense of despair clawing at his heart.
’Damnit! Whoever says I’m lucky must be blind. What the hell is that creature anyway?’
Despite him shouting in his mind, his speed didn’t decrease at all. Even with the burden of carrying two other humans, he didn’t dare slow down.
In a matter of minutes, he arrived at the apartment complex, bursting in through the gates. The others rushed out to meet him as he released the two ladies.
Selene sighed in relief, still refusing to let go of his hand and refusing to open her eyes.
"Leon... where are we now?"
He paused, raising his head to look at the moon. "We’re back at the apartment building. Far from... it."
Only after hearing this did Selene release his hand and wipe the sweat from her brow.
"What happened?" Gwen asked, approaching them with hurried steps.
The others followed her, confused and bewildered.
Leon looked at Gwen, then shook his head. "Forget that for now. We’re leaving."
"Leaving?" Miguel blinked, astonished. "Is it really that dangerous?"
Leon shot him a glare. "Don’t ask me questions."
The blonde guy immediately shut up.
Gwen and Reymond moved to speak with Selene, who appeared to have regained her composure, while Fel silently hugged Cassie.
Leon gave the command to the Titanbreaker Legion, and they began entering the buses.
He walked up to the friendly trio and said, "Selene and Gwen, you both stay in the lead bus. I’ll take the rear."
Selene’s sharp blue eyes narrowed. "Why are you taking the rear?"
"To keep an eye on it, obviously," He answered, his jaw tight.
"You..."
She wanted to say that he was being reckless again, but silenced herself. This wasn’t the time for pointless arguments.
She looked at him deeply and asked, "Do you have a plan?"
"To kill it? Hell, no." Leon folded his arms. "We’re simply escaping."
With that, they also boarded the buses and moved out of the area. The seven buses tore through the streets, their headlights spilling light into the darkness ahead.
"Northeast. That’s our destination. Do not go close to the center at all."
Selene spoke to the driver, causing him to nod repeatedly.
He drove the bus with high professionalism, steering it into streets and ensuring the other bus drivers could keep track and follow him.
Leon sighed in relief when they took a different route, leading them straight to the Bayonne Bridge.
His relief was short-lived, though.
The whole island quaked, and the ground trembled heavily. Around them, he saw houses and other buildings with weak foundations collapse.
’Reminds me a bit of the Manhattan run, but goddamn...’
He could already guess the reason the island was shaking. The abomination was already on the move, trying to devour the fresh souls and flesh that had arrived on its land.
’If worse comes to worst...’
Leon glanced back, sensing the rumbling intensify.
’Wait, shouldn’t it be slow?’
He hurriedly climbed onto the roof of the bus, looking into the distance behind them. He couldn’t see it properly, but he could feel it rolling towards them—at an absurdly fast pace.
’It probably sensed that we’re trying to escape. What a monster...’
The silence of the night was suddenly shattered by loud, chaotic voices. Leon froze, his ears ringing as he caught the sounds.
"Help me! Help! I’m being eaten!"
"Wuuu! Wuu, wuu!"
"Arrrgggghhhhh!!!"
"Don’t run? Come back and join us! Hahaha!"
"One! One! We are one!"
"I don’t want to die!!!"
There were a few human words he could catch among the chaotic voices, and he couldn’t help but feel chilled to the core.
’The people... they’re still alive?’
It wasn’t only human voices he could hear, though. The cry of birds, roars of mutated beasts, and several other sounds painted in anguish, sorrow, and perverted joy.
He immediately signaled for the driver to honk loudly, alerting the lead bus and signalling for them to move faster.
Their speed increased, and they tore through the empty street at a speed that would have earned them a hefty ticket on a normal day.
However, to Leon’s dismay, it wasn’t enough.
He stood on the bus, looking behind them as the stadium-sized flesh colossus rolled towards them. It wasn’t slow at all.
The abomination crushed everything in its path, limbs reaching out to the buses as though it wanted to give a warm hug.
Leon wanted nothing to do with its cursed hug, though.
He kept watching as it closed the distance between them until it was only a few hundred meters away.
At this point, they could also see the Bayonne Bridge a few hundred meters away from them.
Leon heaved a sigh. ’If we can get on the bridge... eh?’
He paused, his eyes widening.
’We definitely can’t cross the bridge before it reaches the bridge too. And if it does that while we’re still on the bridge...’
He could already imagine the river below welcoming them in its cold embrace. Again, he didn’t want any hug or embrace at this moment.
Unless it was from a human. A perfectly normal human, of course.
’Focus, Leonel! Focus!’
His gaze turned back to the creature, seeing that it was already closer to them by at least a hundred meters.
’Do I have to use that again?’ He thought, his eyes sharpening. ’Well, I certainly wasn’t expecting this, but...’
He turned back to the bridge. They had almost reached it. Perhaps less than ten seconds away from reaching it.
Using tendrils of darkness to keep himself anchored to the bus, he stretched a hand towards the creature. He was partly grateful that the head was no longer visible.
The space on his hand darkened, and it felt like the moonlight had grown weaker.
A large sphere of darkness formed on his palm, drawing in the surrounding shadows and darkness element. Then, the sphere began to compress.
Leon’s jaw clenched hard, and he began to sweat. He had to keep all his focus on compressing the sphere as he activated one of his skills—Dark Matter.
If he lost focus and mistakenly released the sphere before it could be fully compressed, then he wouldn’t be erasing the creature. He would be erasing the convoy and every human in the buses.
Fortunately, he didn’t lose focus.
As the last bus rolled onto the bridge and the flesh colossus drew closer to them, he curled in a finger and flicked it.
The compressed sphere vanished from his hand, and for the first time, Leon allowed himself to look directly at the abomination.
"Go to hell."
