World Evolution Apocalypse: I Possess The Extraction Ability
Chapter 240: Dad?Leon chose a room for himself, locked the door, and lay on the bed. He was drained, physically and mentally.
The Dark Matter skill totally wrung him dry of mana, and left him with mental fatigue.
He had no doubt that his thinking capabilities had taken a blow, and he would need some rest to recover.
Perhaps that was the reason why he couldn’t remember where he had learned the word ’parasite’.
Closing his eyes, he emptied his irrelevant thoughts and allowed his mind to relax. Before he knew it, he was already fast asleep.
During this time, he had a strange dream where he found himself sitting at a riverbank with a friend, chatting idly and laughing.
The friend was a boy, but he couldn’t remember his face or voice. He couldn’t even remember their conversation.
All he knew was that he was happy with this friend.
When he woke up the next morning, he barely even remembered that details of the dream, only remembering that it had been a pleasant dream.
"I feel alive once again..."
Yawning, he stood up and stretched. Heading to the bathroom, he was relieved to find out that the building still had access to water supply, so he quickly took a bath and left the room.
Several others of the main group were already in the living room, chatting and discussing among themselves.
Well, only Reymond and Miguel were talking, so it felt wrong to casually generalize and say they were all chatting.
’Not really a necessary detail, no?’
Shrugging in his mind, Leon greeted them and took a seat. Selene, Reymond, Miguel, and Fel returned his greeting.
On the table before them were several snacks they had brought along, and Leon didn’t waste time picking up bread to eat.
No one bothered with frying eggs or making tea, so they simply ate the bread and made peace with it.
’I’d have loved a fish soup, though. But fishing in the apocalypse isn’t really my thing.’
Shaking his head, he ate quietly until Gwen entered the common room.
She still looked a little sleepy, but the moment she saw him, her eyes lit up.
"Good morning, Leon."
He smiled at her and returned the greeting. She gracefully sat beside him, picking a packet of biscuits to eat. She greeted Selene and the others too, then asked, "When are we leaving?"
"In an hour," Leon answered. "We need to refill our tanks. Hopefully, we can get fuel from the filling stations in this place."
Gwen nodded and immediately took out her phone. "Okay... there hasn’t been much news lately, and it seemed the restored internet isn’t as good as it seems."
"Hm? Why do you say so?" Reymond asked, turning to her.
"From what I’ve gathered, only a few key locations like New York, Washington DC, and some other areas have restored networks. There are still other areas that are blank. We also don’t know about the situation in other countries," Gwen explained to him, placing her phone on the table.
"If they are smart, they should focus on stabilizing the country before looking beyond its borders," Selene remarked with her legs crossed and her eyes closed.
’Elegant ahh woman,’ Leon rolled his eyes.
He was feeling strangely light and optimistic today. After all, he was now closer to Newark, and he would soon find his adopted little sister. The thought alone was enough to push the matter of the fleshy abomination to the back of his mind.
As long as he wasn’t returning to Staten Island anytime soon, he didn’t need to concern himself about it. Still, he didn’t forget to be cautious.
"Gwen, kindly send Marie a message, informing them not to approach the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge or Staten Island at all."
The atmosphere in the room turned serious, and Gwen nodded. No one said anything else, each person lost in their own thoughts.
After he was done eating, Leon went outside and called for the Titanbreaker Legion warriors to assemble.
Looking at the neat lineup and their identical armor, forged by himself and the other blacksmiths, he felt a flicker of pride and satisfaction.
"Was there any problem yesterday while you kept watch?"
They all shook their heads, then one person stepped forward.
Leon recognized him as Lucas Jones, and he quietly turned to him.
The young man saluted Leon, then handed him a bag filled with ability scrolls and treasure cubes.
"These are all we got after killing the zombies that came too close, Commander."
Leon accepted the bag and checked. The ability scrolls were all unranked abilities just as he had expected, so he wasn’t really impressed.
However, he still decided to check each abilities. After browsing through them, he was a little disappointed. Some were good, some were decent, but there was no extraordinary ability there.
He calmly took out a list containing the abilities of all the Evolvers in the Titanbreaker Legion, then checked which members would be compatible with the decent abilities.
After distributing, he looked northward and declared, "We’re moving out."
In a matter of minutes, the buses rolled out of the compound, back onto the empty streets filled with crashed vehicles and scattered zombies.
Gwen sat in the lead bus, using her telekinetic ability to push the cars blocking them away. This helped them greatly since they didn’t have to wait all the time for men to get down and physically push the vehicles out of the way.
After half an hour of driving, they finally found a filling station where they could refuel their tanks.
Sadly, they weren’t the first customers in this filling station that was without attendants. When the buses parked, the first customers immediately turned toward them, watching them warily.
To avoid unnecessary battles—especially against humans—Leon and the members of the main group alighted from the buses while the Titanbreaker Legion remained inside as he had commanded.
The situation somewhat reminded him of how he had met Sergeant Lauren and the people from the NYPD 48th Precinct Station.
’I wonder how they’re faring?’
Leon’s gaze swept across the four Evolvers.
They weren’t ordinary survivors. They wore standard gear—perhaps Tier One armor and weapons, and their movements carried the discipline of people who had fought together repeatedly.
The middle-aged man standing at the front was clearly their leader. His eyes remained fixed on Leon, cautious but not openly hostile.
"Who are you guys? And where did you come from?"
Before Leon could speak, Cassie beat him to it.
"Dad?"
