Chapter 257: Problematic Subordinate [100 PS Bonus - (2)]Chapter 257: Problematic Subordinate [100 PS Bonus Chapter (2)]
Pouring a cup of wine for himself, Mark picked up the cup and stood at the head of the table. Everyone fell silent and turned to him.
Smiling, the middle-aged man said, "I want to thank everyone present here for everything you did for me. To you, it might have been just a mission. But to me, it was more than that. It was about whether I would get back the woman who birthed me, or whether I would lose her."
The mood turned somber as the weight of his words settled on them.
Mark’s smile widened. "My heart was filled with unease. Now, it is filled with joy and gratitude."
He bent his back, bowing to everyone at the table. "I am eternally grateful to you all."
Straightening himself, he raised the cup of wine and said, "A toast... to you all!"
The others poured wine for themselves and drank with him, with the exception of Sean who had to settle for a fruit juice with a grumpy expression.
Mark sat down and turned to Leon. "Have you decided when you’ll be leaving? I’m preparing something for you and I hope you’ll be able to see it."
Leon answered calmly, "Tomorrow morning. We can’t linger too long lest we grow relaxed."
"Oh..." Mark was disappointed, but soon smiled again. "Well, if you’re coming back, then you can always branch this place. It’ll be ready by then."
Leon nodded with a smile. "I’ll keep in mind, then."
Bliss cleared her throat and spoke up. "Ahem. I’ve decided to follow you guys on your journey to Newark."
The dining hall froze, and almost everyone was shocked.
"L-Leader?" Arnold stuttered, his mask of composure broken for the first time.
Even he hadn’t expected that from her.
Waving her hand, Bliss explained. "The only Tier Two threat in the city has already been neutralized. Besides, you can manage the camp while I’m gone. I’m mainly curious about the Newark camp and want to see it for myself."
Arnold fell silent, unable to argue. A long sigh escaped him as he nodded. "Understood, Leader."
Bliss turned to Leon with a faint smile. "I can come with you guys, right?"
He nodded with a carefree smile. "Sure. It’ll be to our benefit if we have your company."
Sean set down his cup of juice and turned to Cassie. "Big sis, you’re not going with them, are you?"
Cassie paused, then said firmly. "I’m going. Why do you ask?"
Her parents looked at her, a little surprised yet not entirely surprised. They had already expected something like this.
Leon turned to the black-haired lady with a light frown. "Cassie, you’re staying here until we come back. Shouldn’t you be eager to be with them now that you’ve just met?"
Unexpectedly, she stared back at him and shook her head. "I’ve already confirmed that their all fine and not in danger. And that’s including my grandmother. I don’t see any reason to stay behind and be complacent because of that. Besides, staying behind will only make me useless."
Leon felt it immediately. A glare from her younger brother and a growing headache as he was reminded of her stubbornness.
Rubbing his temples, he explained, "You’re not suddenly useless by staying here, Cassie. Your family needs you. Spend some time with them, will you?"
She still shook her head. "Spending time with my family sounds nice, but it doesn’t change the fact that I’ll be useless to you."
Leon’s expression twitched as he began to grow annoyed.
His smile turned stiff, and he stood up. He walked over to her and dragged her upstairs to avoid further embarrassment.
Besides, Sean’s glare was already becoming something unbearable.
He finally stopped at the hallway of the third floor and turned to face her.
"Cass. Forget our master-subordinate relationship right now. Don’t you want to stay with them? You just found your family."
Cassie’s clear blue eyes stared at him as she shook her head. "That would have been nice, but no. I know they aren’t in danger, which puts my mind at rest. Staying here will only stall my growth and I’ll become increasingly useless."
"Useless this, useless that," Leon rolled his eyes. "Can you drop that word for a sec?"
To his surprise, Cassie’s eyes suddenly moistened and she lowered her head. "You don’t understand... I don’t want to be left behind. Do you know how it feels? Never being able to help? You’re going to Newark which is potentially an enemy camp and you’re asking me not to follow you. Do you think I’d just sit back like a trained dog while you venture into danger?"
Leon’s lips parted silently, as he had no words to say to that.
Sighing, he ran a hand through his hair while he placed the other on her shoulder.
"I understand you, Cassie. I know you want to follow me and protect me. But..." He paused, taking a deep breath. "Think about your family, will you? You just reunited with them and they would definitely want to spend time with you."
She raised her head to look at him, and he continued.
"You’re not abandoning me for them. You’re only taking a break to relax. When I return from Newark, we’re all heading back to our city. So just treat it as a vacation before you get back to work."
Cassie still shook her head, then sighed. "Is there a guarantee you won’t need me there?"
Leon didn’t lie. "No, there is no guarantee. However, I would also be aware that I have someone waiting for me, so I can promise not to die, at least."
Cassie seemed to be strangely reassured by his words and nodded. She took a step forward and hugged him, pressing her face against his chest.
"I’m sorry for being willful, Boss," She apologized sincerely. "I embarrassed you downstairs by being disobedient."
Leon hugged her back and patted her head. "It’s fine. It just shows that you genuinely care, and I’m happy with that."
"Mn," Cassie hummed and nodded but didn’t release him.
Leon also didn’t step back or push her away, as he wanted her to calm down properly before they returned downstairs.
The two remained standing in the hallway for several minutes until Cassie finally released a contented sigh and let go of him.
Leon also sighed. ’Surely, I have a lot of strange women around me. Only Fel seems normal.’
He turned around and walked back downstairs with Cassie, not noticing a pair of gentle yellow eyes watching them from the fourth floor.
