World Evolution Apocalypse: I Possess The Extraction Ability
Chapter 258: Departure—Bye To BayonneThe sun rose early, bathing the world in its light and warmth. People came out of their houses to shake off the lingering cold and collect buckets of water that had been left outside when the rain was falling.
Leon stood with the others outside Mark’s mansion, all geared up. They were leaving early, with Cassie staying behind.
Fel hugged her friend tightly, then smiled. "Please take care of yourself. See you soon."
Cassie nodded, allowing a small smile to appear on her face. Her family stood slightly behind her, watching their daughter interact with Fel.
"She’s really attached to that group, hm?" Ava smiled lightly, shaking her head.
With an arm around her shoulder, Mark replied. "Yes. Although they’ve only spent about two months together, they are already very close."
Ava nodded with a warm smile that widened when her daughter turned to her.
"Is everyone ready?"
Leon asked as he adjusted his gloves, his gaze sweeping over the others. Gwen, Selene, Reymond, Miguel, Fel, and finally, Bliss.
Although it surprised him when she suddenly claimed she wanted to join them on their journey, he found no reason to refuse.
Besides, she was a powerful Tier Two Evolver and her strength would definitely be a plus to them.
The others in the group had no hard feelings against her joining, and they welcomed her with casual friendliness. Only Miguel seemed to be hovering around her like a bee attracted to a flower.
Sadly, Richard wasn’t here to make fun of him.
Seeing them all nod, Leon turned to look at the Titanbreaker Legion. They were all geared up and ready for the journey too. The sight brought a smile to his face.
Finally, he turned to look at Cassie.
"I’ll be back soon," He started, then teased. "You better get plenty of rest, because I’m going to work you to the bone when I come back."
Cassie smiled beautifully and bowed. "As you wish, Master."
Leon gave her a flat look and immediately turned around. He wasn’t ready for a weird conversation with her this early in the morning.
"Move out!"
The group of Evolvers marched out of the city under the gazes of the survivors and soon arrived at their modified transport vehicles.
Soon, the buses were filled and drove away from the camp, heading through the streets straight towards Jersey City. The ride was quiet and peaceful, with only a few attacks from mutated beasts and stray zombies.
Evolvers with ranged abilities quickly dealt with them, ensuring no one had to get down and engage in melee combat.
An hour later, they finally crossed the borders of Bayonne City and entered into Jersey City. The difference was seen immediately.
Unlike the relatively peaceful atmosphere over Bayonne, Jersey City was embroiled in chaos.
Mutated beasts attacked each other like wild animals let loose—which wasn’t wrong in a sense, and the streets echoed with victorious howls and pained roars.
The buses were forced to slow down to deal with the beasts blocking their path, and the situation only got worse when they moved deeper into the city.
"Why is it so chaotic here? Mutated beasts from our forest back home usually tolerate each other to some extent," Gwen muttered in disbelief as she looked at the scene before them.
It wasn’t a sight she was used to.
Leon rolled his shoulders and said, "Looks like we can’t rely on ranged abilities to deal with them anymore. We’ll only slow ourselves down."
With that, he commanded half of the legion to disembark from the buses and flank them as escorts.
Evolvers could easily catch up to the speed of the modified buses so there was no difficulty in defeating the beasts while protecting the buses.
With the intervention of melee fighters, their speed increased, and they were able to move out of the chaos zone in less than twenty minutes.
The moment they crossed an invisible boundary, they realized there was no other mutated beasts in sight. It felt as if they were intentionally not crossing into the new territory out of fear for something.
"A strong mutated beast, perhaps?" Reymond cocked an eyebrow, glancing around through the windows.
They continued driving through the eerily silent streets until they felt the deep vibrations from the ground.
"Stop the buses. Something is coming," Leon said seriously, already opening the door as he alighted from the lead bus.
The other buses parked behind him while the members of the main group also joined him outside.
Soon, they saw the cause of the tremors. It was an oversized chicken the size of a minivan. Its white feathers glinted with unusual sharpness, and the beast looked comical given its size.
However, no one dared laughed at it upon seeing the crystal on its forehead—a blue soul crystal.
"Tier Two chicken?" Miguel’s lips twitched.
Beside him, Reymond’s eyes widened. "Great! It really fits my requirements!"
He immediately turned to the others and said sincerely, "Guys, please let me handle this one alone. It’s for my Tier Two evolution requirements."
Leon, Gwen, and Selene were surprised but easily agreed with him. Although none of them had seen Reymond fight a Tier Two, they didn’t think he was completely outmatched.
Besides, if things went south, they were always available to lend a hand.
Reymond nodded gratefully and stepped forward with his eyes closed. His fingers closed around the hilt of his sword resting in his sheath, and he drew it slightly from its sheath.
The mutated chicken immediately turned its attention towards him, its yellow beak opening to release a loud cry.
Reymond tensed as soon as he heard, further reinforcing his belief that the creature was dangerous.
’Alright. I mustn’t mess this up,’ He thought as lightning crackled over the blade as he unsheathed it.
Sensing his intention to attack, the mutated chicken didn’t wait. It unfurled its massive wings and flapped them in his direction.
Reymond’s eyes narrowed as several feathers shot towards him while carrying sharpness unexpected of feathers.
Lightning flashed all over him, and he dodged each feather, noticing how they easily tore through the concrete ground and sank into the earth.
’Okay, this beast might be even more dangerous than I thought.’
