World Evolution Apocalypse: I Possess The Extraction Ability
Chapter 282: Back In BayonneA few hours later, they entered the zombie territory in Jersey City. Instead of slaughtering the horde by himself like he had done earlier, Leon chose to let the Titanbreaker Legion fight the battle.
It had been a few days since they had fought anything, and they were a blade he wanted to keep perpetually sharp.
With vigor and enthusiasm, the warriors fell upon the zombie horde and began to slaughter them. It didn’t take long before the zombies fell into chaos.
Despite their overwhelming numbers, they failed to bring down the humans. Instead, the humans plowed through them, carving a bloodstained path for the buses to pass through.
Leon stood atop the lead bus, overseeing the battle. He wasn’t just watching for the sake of seeing his men perform.
He was viewing the world through the shadows, using materialized shadows to save a few warriors who would have lost their lives from mistakes.
Those who came close to death were shaken by the experience, but they weren’t broken. Instead, they hardened their hearts and fought with caution and savagery. Still, they all felt gratitude in their hearts towards Leon.
He wasn’t saving them from all injuries, and that was fine. As long as they didn’t die, they could heal and grow stronger.
Leon wasn’t only watching over his men merely to protect them. He was also keeping an eye on the zombie horde, watching out for the stronger ones that couldn’t be handled by the Titanbreaker Legion.
If any of them appeared, he would have to step in personally.
’Somehow, I feel like a parent.’
He shook his head, unamused by the thought. His attention remained divided.
A larger part of him was writhing with worry, concern, and a little bit of grief. Not finding Clara in the Newark Camp had been quite a shock to him. He had been shaken, and for several hours, his emotions were a mess.
His hopes had been high, only to be brutally crushed by her absence. Still, there were elements of relief. She was alive the last time she had been seen, and she had voluntarily taken the mission issued by the council along with a few others.
Leon had been tempted to go back and knock some sense into the mayor for spouting arrant nonsense earlier, but he had restrained himself. He wasn’t a person to back down from a fight, but he wasn’t stupid enough to jump into every fight.
’As long as she’s alive...’
Feeling a pair of arms wrap around his waist and a soft body press against his back, he smiled faintly.
Thyra hugged him as he closed his eyes and watched the world through the shadows. To his surprise, he felt strangely at ease.
Even though battle raged on around him, it felt like a calm silence.
Thyra shifted behind him, resting her chin on his shoulder.
"When are you going to move? Your men are getting tired."
Leon sighed through his lips. "Not yet. Let them endure for a while longer."
Thyra nodded and no longer said anything. She simply watched the battle with him, fusing her senses with the shadows too.
A few minutes later, Leon noticed one of the warriors faltering. The woman’s sword slipped out of her grip slightly, causing her to miss.
The zombie which should have been beheaded only had one of its arms cut, and it lunged at her.
Her body was already leaning forward, and she could not dodge. A sharp glint passed through her eyes, and she turned slightly.
The zombie’s claws tore through the gap in her armor, and her forehead smashed against its head.
Bang!
The zombie was knocked back, its follow-up attack failed. Before it could recover, she grabbed it by the neck and skewered it.
[You have slain a Level 23 Normal Zombie!]
[You cannot level up!]
[Progress has been stored!]
’I killed it.’
Adrenaline surged through her as she savored the victory, and her blood boiled. However, she was already tired. Her arms were sore, and her hands were covered in dark blood.
The sword she was holding was starting to slip from her grip again. Yet, the fervor in her eyes only grew.
’Win... win...’
A mad grin appeared on her face, and she swung the sword again.
Leon watched several similar scenes on the battlefield. He knew this stage, and he knew he had pushed them enough.
Any further would only be pushing them past their limit and breaking them.
"Fall back!"
His words were a command. The moment they heard, the Titanbreaker Legion did as they were told. They began retreating, abandoning zombies that they could have killed if they stayed a few seconds longer.
They didn’t dare disobey. Not because they feared him, but because they revered him.
Thyra released Leon, and he jumped between the retreating warriors and the advancing zombies.
Without raising a hand, he coldly muttered, "Darkness Descent."
The world lost its light, and everything became engulfed in darkness and silence. When the darkness cleared, thousands of zombies lay dead, skewered and maimed in unimaginable ways.
Once again using the shadows, Leon cleared the pathway amid the sea of corpses.
"Move out."
The buses rolled forward, crushing eyeballs and internal organs beneath their tires. From that point on, the zombie horde avoided them. The mysterious Zombie King let them pass, knowing it would suffer heavy losses against this particular group led by the shadowy man.
Once they left the zombie territory, their journey back to Bayonne was only a matter of time.
They had killed the Tier Two Mutated Chicken, so its territory was now flooded with weaker beasts. Fortunately, these weaker beasts posed no real threat to them.
By nightfall, they finally entered Bayonne and reached the camp. The buses pulled to a stop outside the wall, and the Evolvers on guard duty immediately came to welcome them.
Arnold appeared as quickly as he could, but Cassie was already there. The young lady stood at the gates, watching the warriors get down from the buses with a glint in her eyes.
An imaginary tail seemed to wag behind her alongside imaginary fox ears twitching on her head.
Leon finally came down from the bus, and his gaze fell upon her. He smiled and raised his hand to wave.
Before he could react, she pounced on him.
