World Evolution Apocalypse: I Possess The Extraction Ability
Chapter 288: Shitty LuckDespite its seemingly sluggish movements, the zombie was very fast. The sharp tentacles on its back moved like whips to intercept Leon midair.
Unfazed, he swung his spear, using his momentum to push the two appendages aside. As he shifted to the side, Selene took the opening and swung her sword straight at the zombie’s head.
Ice erupted at the edge of the blade, slicing into its neck cleanly. At the last moment, the zombie pulled back, its wound writhing disgustingly as it closed.
Leon frowned slightly as he stood beside Selene. He felt a little unsettled. On the other hand, Selene felt puzzled. "Zombies can regenerate that fast?"
No one answered their questions. This time, the zombie itself attacked. It dug the two tentacles into the ground, then launched itself forward like a catapult.
Only when it rose in the air did they understand why it was so slow. Both legs were burned and covered in ugly wounds. It definitely couldn’t walk well in that condition.
Still, Leon wondered, ’Shouldnt it be able to heal its injured legs?’
Unfortunately, he had no time to give himself an answer. The zombie fell towards him, claws spread wide, ready to tear him into pieces.
Instead of retreating, Leon stepped forward and stabbed with his spear. The zombie was unable to dodge and fell directly on the spear, its head pierced cleanly.
The sharp black claws stopped just a few inches away from Leon’s face, unable to reach him. A few seconds later, its arms dropped, and it was dead.
[You have slain a Level 54 Tier Two Parasite Zombie!]
[You cannot level up!]
[Progress has been stored!]
Leon’s eyes widened, and he quickly pulled away from it. The corpse dropped to the ground, and Selene approached with narrowed eyes.
"What’s the matter?"
Pointing at it, Leon said grimly. "It was a parasite."
"Huh?" She stared at him in confusion. "You’ve mentioned that before. What’s a parasite?"
Taking his eyes off the corpse, he answered, "Nasty single-celled organisms that can enter any living being and take control of the body permanently. They’re very infectious too."
Selene’s expression hardened, and she took several steps away from the zombie corpse.
"So it wasn’t really a zombie?"
Leon shook his head. "No. That was more of a parasite wearing zombie skin. I already killed it, though."
Turning his gaze back to the corpse, he concluded in his mind. ’The parasites always live inside the head. I see.’
Standing a safe distance away, he used his spear to carve out its soul crystal and stored it away.
He finally turned back to Selene and told her his observation.
"The head, huh?" She muttered. "I’ll note that."
Leon nodded. "Let’s check around some more. Perhaps there are human camps or something."
Shaking her head, she corrected him. "Alien camps, you mean?"
Not bothering to change his words, he said as he started walking, "Let’s go already."
Selene gave the corpse one last look before following him. They passed through the grassland for half an hour before eventually entering another forest. Unlike the burnt forest, this one had large, healthy trees with vibrant green leaves.
The trees were unnaturally tall, but after spending two months in the apocalypse on Earth, Leon and Selene were already used to this sight.
Cautiously, they entered the forest. The instant they did, they were attacked. A weird black insect that looked like a mix between a cockroach and a grasshopper shot towards them, its sharp front legs poised to stab.
Leon and Selene each deflected a leg with their weapons before slashing at the joints. The insect retreated before their combined attacks could land.
Staring at the green crystal on its forehead, Selene’s expression darkened. "Don’t ever argue with me about your bad luck again, Leon. You have shitty luck."
The young man felt insulted but didn’t argue. Whatever she thought of his luck, she wasn’t wrong about this creature.
Their first thought was to run. However, they quickly discarded the thought.
The creature was insanely fast. If they dared to turn their backs to it, they might not even know when they died.
’Nope, definitely not an option.’
The insect stared at them intensely with its large eyes. Leon shivered and muttered, "Should I nuke it?"
If he used his Dark Matter skill, he was pretty confident that it’d die.
Selene shot him a glare and hissed. "Is that the only thing you know how to use? Save it for when it probably won’t kill us too."
Being one of the first witnesses of that particular skill, she didn’t want to be anywhere near him whenever he used it again.
Leon dropped the idea too, then sighed. A flash of light enveloped him, and the insect turned its attention toward him.
However, he was already gone from there. Instead, he reappeared right beside it and stabbed with his spear.
Puchi!
The sharp black blade pierced its body, but before Leon could drive it deeper, the insect kicked him in the chest.
Bang!
He heard and felt a rib crack as he was launched in the air. Thankfully, the leg that kicked him wasn’t like its front legs. Otherwise, his torso would have been pierced cleanly.
The insect turned to him and tried to follow, only to realize it was stuck. It glanced at the ice holding its legs to the ground, then turned its head towards Selene.
Its black eyes shone ominously.
Alarmed, Selene immediately threw herself to the ground.
Slice! Thud!
Several thin black lines passed over her and struck the tree behind her. The tree shifted, then toppled to the ground in segments.
Her pupils shrunk in horror. ’What kind of ability is that?’
Having regained his bearings, Leon teleported again, right above the insect.
He dropped on it—hard.
Puchi!
His spear pierced the gap between the plates of its carapace, and he managed to make it stumble. Straining to push the spear deeper, he watched as it turned its head to look at him.
Seeing its eyes shine ominously again, Selene cried out. "Idiot, dodge!"
Leon had barely managed to pull out his spear when the attacks hit him. As he was lifted off its back, blood spurted from his arms, stomach, and legs.
’Fuck!’
