And somewhere deep inside, he had always believed that he could never truly become as close to his family as biological siblings could be.
The two men fell silent. Neither of them wanted to admit what they were thinking. Then Annie suddenly looked in their direction.
"You two."
Both men immediately straightened. Annie pointed between them. "Who do you think is in the wrong?"
Annie’s brother and Felix immediately raised their hands. "We don’t know."
Their expressions were remarkably serious. Internally, however, both of them were thinking the exact same thing.
’We absolutely refuse to get involved in this.’
They knew Annie too well.
If they took Annie’s side, Gwen would be furious. If they took Gwen’s side, Annie would be furious.
And if both sisters became angry with them, they would be the ones suffering afterward.
Therefore, the safest choice was obvious. They would remain completely neutral.
So, neither of them dared to act arrogantly or take anyone’s side.
Annie and Gwen merely snorted before walking away together.
"Both of them are idiots. I am truly done with those two; they never understand anything I say."
Gwen suddenly paused, as though remembering something particularly ridiculous.
"You might not know this, but one time I asked Felix to bring me some flowers. He came back with tomatoes."
Annie stared at her in disbelief. "Tomatoes?"
Gwen nodded with a completely serious expression.
"He told me that tomatoes were still considered a type of flower in one of the books he had read."
Annie’s lips twitched. "Really? I think that is even more idiotic than anything I expected."
Gwen shrugged. "At that time, I thought he was deliberately trying to make me laugh. But now..."
She paused and made a vague gesture toward her head. "...I think his brain is simply wired differently."
Annie nodded sympathetically. "I can somewhat understand your frustration."
The two women continued talking without realizing that Felix was standing directly behind them.
When Felix finally heard everything they had been saying, his face turned red with anger. "Have some shame! I am standing right here!"
Annie and Gwen froze. Slowly, they turned around. Felix stood there with his arms crossed, glaring at them.
Both women exchanged an awkward glance. "We apologize. We genuinely didn’t realize you were here."
Felix rolled his eyes. "I can somewhat understand how clever you two have become. You both resemble..."
He paused dramatically.
"You both resemble..." each other...
The moment those words left his mouth, Annie and Gwen simultaneously kicked off their slippers.
Felix’s eyes widened. "Wait!"
The two women immediately chased after him. "Come back here! You better finish that sentence!"
Felix immediately ran. "I didn’t even say anything!"
Annie’s adopted brother watched the scene unfold.
Without hesitation, he quietly moved aside and made himself as small as possible.
’I am not getting involved in this. My brother-in-law is finished this time.’
..........
Meanwhile, someone else was dealing with a completely different kind of frustration.
Danielle. She had originally thought that after Asher left, she would finally feel relieved.
She had even imagined that she might rejoice once the annoying man was no longer constantly appearing in front of her.
Yet, only two days had passed. And she already missed him terribly.
The realization had struck her so suddenly that she couldn’t even pretend it wasn’t true anymore.
’I really love him.’
The thought made her chest ache. ’Then why didn’t I realize it sooner?’
Because of her own foolishness, she had never gathered enough courage to confess.
She had spent so much time convincing herself that Asher was merely a friend that she had failed to recognize how deeply attached she had become to him.
Just as Danielle released a quiet sigh, she heard someone nearby speaking excitedly.
It was one of the women in her department, Angel.
"I still can’t believe it. Sir Asher finally confessed his feelings to me."
The moment those words were spoken, the entire department became silent.
Everyone immediately turned toward Angel. "What? He confessed to you? Seriously, Angel?"
Angel nodded, her cheeks already beginning to turn pink.
"It happened a few days ago. You might not know this, but Asher and I grew up together. We can practically be considered childhood sweethearts."
Danielle’s expression immediately sank. Her heart seemed to drop into the pit of her stomach.
’So Asher already confessed to someone else.’
For a brief moment, she felt an unexpected sense of relief.
’It’s probably better that I never confessed. If I had confessed, I would have only embarrassed myself.’
Angel continued happily. "He only started pursuing me seriously two days ago, and I think I’m going to say yes to him."
The moment she said that, several women around her immediately began laughing.
"Don’t! At least let him chase you properly first."
"Exactly. Only then will you know whether he truly cherishes you. Besides, if a man gets a woman too easily, he might start thinking that she doesn’t value herself enough."
Angel’s cheeks became even redder. "But I’ve liked him for such a long time. And now that he has finally started pursuing me..."
She lowered her gaze shyly. "How am I supposed to make him suffer unnecessarily?"
The women around her immediately burst into teasing laughter.
"Oh, look at her! Someone can’t bear to watch her future boyfriend suffer."
Angel covered her face shyly. "Stop teasing me."
The laughter continued around her. Danielle quietly looked away. ’It’s not something I should care about.’
She lowered her eyes toward her work. ’It has nothing to do with me.’
She forced herself to concentrate on the documents in front of her.
Yet the words kept replaying inside her head.
’Asher confessed to Angel.’
She clenched her fingers around the pen.
Then, suddenly, someone announced from the entrance, "Someone has delivered roses and chocolates here."
Everyone immediately looked toward the delivery man.
He was carrying a large bouquet of fresh roses in one hand and an elegantly wrapped box of chocolates in the other.
The delivery man looked down at the card attached to the bouquet.
"The flowers and chocolates have been sent to..."
He paused.
The name on the card appeared strangely blurred. He frowned and rubbed his eyes before giving up.
Then he remembered what Asher had specifically instructed him to say.
"Mr. Asher told me that these flowers and chocolates are for the woman who knows him best. He also said that she should come forward and collect them herself."
The delivery man paused before adding, "He said that if she has even an ounce of self-awareness, she will know exactly who they are meant for."
The entire department went silent.
Then everyone’s gaze slowly shifted toward Angel.
"Oh my God. That is incredibly romantic. He didn’t even leave any room for doubt. He’s basically claiming you publicly!"
Angel covered her mouth, her face turning bright red.
She looked toward the delivery man. "It’s for me."
The delivery man studied her for a moment. She was indeed beautiful.
’So this must be the woman Mr. Asher was talking about.’
He smiled and handed the flowers and chocolates to her. Angel carefully accepted them.
The bouquet was large enough to cover most of her upper body, and the fragrance of roses surrounded her.
She shyly covered her face.
"I... I’ll go call Asher first."
With that, Angel hurried away with the bouquet and chocolates clutched against her chest.
Danielle watched her disappear down the hallway.
Her expression remained calm.
But inside, it felt as though someone had driven a sharp blade directly into her heart.
Danielle tried to control her emotions, forcing herself to remain composed.
She lowered her head and buried herself in work, allowing the familiar rhythm of tasks to distract her from everything that had happened.
Finally, as lunchtime approached, she decided to step inside and go to the washroom. However, the moment she reached the hall, she stopped.
She saw Angel standing there with her friend beside her, softly sobbing as she wiped at the tears gathering in her eyes.
The sight immediately sent a strange, unpleasant premonition through Danielle. Her stomach tightened, and for a moment, she felt a chill crawl across her skin. ’Something is wrong.’
However, she refused to look in their direction for too long and continued walking as though she had not noticed them. She had barely taken a few steps when Angel suddenly called out to her.
"Danielle."
Danielle paused and slowly turned around to look at her.
Angel walked toward her and gently held out a bouquet of flowers along with a box of chocolates.
"These are for you."
Danielle stared at the flowers in stunned disbelief, her fingers hovering uncertainly before finally reaching toward them.
"For me?"
Angel nodded quietly.
Danielle’s heart began beating faster. She could not understand what was happening.
The warmth of the flowers brushed against her fingertips, and for one foolish moment, a fragile hope began to bloom inside her.
’Could it be that all the feelings I had for Asher were not one-sided after all?’
