Chapter 796: Chapter 796: Switched?
Meanwhile, during lunch, another delivery arrived. This time, it was a box.
The moment the delivery man entered the cafeteria carrying it, several people turned their heads curiously.
He walked directly toward Danielle before stopping in front of her.
"This is for you."
Danielle did not even look at the delivery man. Her eyes remained fixed on the table as she asked quietly, "Is it from Asher?"
The delivery man nodded. "Yes."
Danielle’s fingers tightened around the edge of the table.
"Then just go and deliver it to Angel. I am not the correct recipient."
The delivery man’s expression became serious.
"It is for you. Even the flowers and chocolates were for you all along."
Hearing those words, Danielle gritted her teeth.
A strange mixture of embarrassment and anger burnt in her chest, and she was about to say something when Angel suddenly appeared behind her and gently tapped her shoulder.
Danielle turned around and looked at her.
Angel offered her a hesitant smile.
"If you do not mind, can I take that box?"
Danielle stared at her for a moment before abruptly pushing the box toward her.
"Sure, go ahead. Just take it."
Angel flinched slightly at the sharpness in Danielle’s voice, but she still took the box and walked away.
The delivery man watched the exchange with narrowed eyes.
Something about the situation seemed strange to him, but he did not say anything. He simply turned around and left.
That evening, just as Danielle was preparing to leave, Angel approached her again.
She held out the same box. "This is yours. I will not take it."
Before Danielle could refuse, Angel placed the box directly into her hands.
Danielle frowned. The weight of the box felt strangely unfamiliar, and when she shifted it slightly, she felt something moving inside.
Her brows knitted together. "What is this?"
She opened the box.
The moment she saw what was inside, the color drained from her face.
There were numerous photographs of her appearing intimate with other men.
For several seconds, Danielle could not breathe. Her fingertips became cold, and a wave of nausea rolled through her stomach as she stared at the photographs.
’How did they get these?’
Beneath the photographs was another letter. With trembling fingers, Danielle picked it up and slowly unfolded it.
The contents were simple.
Asher knew that Danielle had already told him she would not pester him anymore. However, this was a warning.
If she dared to show even the slightest remaining interest in him, he would make sure those photographs were leaked.
The letter also stated that he would be waiting outside her apartment that night. Today was a test.
She needed to be prepared.
The moment Danielle finished reading, her fingers curled tightly around the letter. Anger began replacing the fear that had initially frozen her.
"I..."
She suddenly looked at Angel, her eyes filled with fury.
"Are you sure this was the letter that was originally inside the box?"
The moment Danielle asked that question, Angel fell silent.
For a few seconds, she merely stared at Danielle before finally speaking in a wounded voice.
"Danielle, are you doubting me?"
She pressed a hand against her chest, her expression filled with disbelief.
"First, you went ahead and seduced my admirer. I did not say much about it, and now you are accusing me of switching letters?"
Danielle shook her head.
Even if she had been an idiot, by now she had already realized that something was terribly wrong.
"Since you are not willing to tell me the truth, I will confront Asher myself."
With that, Danielle stood up. However, before she could take another step, Angel suddenly grabbed her hand.
Her expression darkened.
"Danielle, have some shame. You are thinking about going after my admirer again? Dream on. If you continue this, I will make sure the entire department knows about your shameful behavior."
Danielle looked down at Angel’s hand around her wrist before slowly looking back at her face. Then she chuckled.
"What if I do?"
Her voice was unexpectedly calm.
"From my perspective, it seems as though Asher is not interested in you at all. Thinking about it now, the whole situation is extremely strange. How can someone send flowers and chocolates to a person when they supposedly want them to stop pestering him? That is completely out of character."
Danielle pulled her hand free.
"It looks like I need to confront Asher myself."
Angel stared at her for a moment before suddenly chuckling.
"You are truly delusional. I cannot stop you if you are determined to embarrass yourself."
With that, Angel turned around and walked away.
Danielle remained standing there, stunned.
’Shouldn’t Angel have tried harder to stop me according to her original plan?’
A strange suspicion crept into Danielle’s mind.
’Could it really be that Angel didn’t switch the letters sent by Asher?’
If that were true, then it would be understandable why Angel had allowed her to confront him so easily.
Danielle’s confidence slowly disappeared. Perhaps she had been overthinking everything. Perhaps the letter really had been written by Asher.
The realization left her completely deflated. She slowly returned to her chair and collapsed into it with a long sigh.
Meanwhile, Angel glanced back and saw Danielle sitting there.
A faint chuckle escaped her lips.
She had realized that Danielle had been bluffing.
In truth, Danielle herself had not been completely certain about her suspicion.
Angel lowered her gaze and closed her eyes for a moment.
The fact that she was Asher’s childhood sweetheart, or more precisely, his childhood neighbour, was not a lie.
She knew Asher very well.
In fact, she had once been obsessed with him to such an extent that she had learned the way he wrote.
She had even imitated his handwriting and managed to convince almost the entire school that Asher secretly had feelings for her.
Unfortunately, no one believed her for long because Asher had directly exposed her lie.
The humiliation had been unbearable.
After that incident, Angel stopped chasing Asher.
At least, she had stopped for a while.
That changed when she discovered Asher’s connection to Silas.
For a moment, she almost regretted ever giving up on him.
’It was clearly such a golden opportunity, and I missed it purely because of my own stupidity.’
But it was still not too late.
She could still pursue Asher, and there was a high chance that she could eventually make him hers.
The only regret was the flowers and chocolates.
In order to gain everyone’s acceptance, Angel had deliberately taken them in front of everyone and planned to give them to whoever they originally belonged to.
She merely wanted to create the illusion that she was close to Asher so that she could gain some benefits from that connection.
Who would have thought that Asher would actually send flowers and chocolates to someone?
They were not for his girlfriend. They were for someone he had a crush on. And that person was Danielle.
Angel’s lips curled slightly as she remembered her.
’That girl is so tanned.’
Danielle’s features were actually quite delicate, but because of her tanned complexion, Angel believed she did not look nearly as attractive as herself.
For Angel, that was precisely what made the situation even more difficult to understand.
’How could Asher possibly choose someone like her?’
This made Angel believe that if she played a little trick, Danielle would finally back out.
With that thought in mind, she had switched the letters.
However, whenever she remembered the actual contents of the original letter, Angel could feel her anger surging through her veins.
Asher had written that he had started to develop feelings for Danielle, and if her answer was yes, she should give him an answer when they met that night. If she did not like him, she could simply tell him that she did not want to have any further contact with him.
That was precisely why Angel had switched the letter.
She hoped that the misunderstanding would be enough to make Danielle give up. Even if it did not work, she could simply wash her hands of the entire matter and claim that the letter she had received was the one she had handed over.
’It is not as though anyone can force me to admit what I actually did.’
With that smug thought, Angel closed her eyes and waited for the night to come. If Danielle and Asher ended up fighting again, that would be even better.
